Mesothelioma deaths rose by 9% from 1999 to 2005
A report by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has found that deaths from malignant mesothelioma rose by almost 9% between 1999 and 2005. The study uncovered a total of 18,068 reported mesothelioma deaths over that time period. (more…)
Family of Missouri man awarded $4.5M in asbestos lawsuit
The family of a Missouri man who died of mesothelioma cancer has been awarded $4.5 million in their asbestos lawsuit against three manufacturing companies. The mesothelioma lawsuit filed by the family of Robert Wagner alleged that he was exposed to asbestos during his more than three decade career installing asbestos-containing products. (more…)
New mesothelioma treatments show signs of success
Cancer treatments specialists have begun to see success with several new methods of treating patients with a deadly form of cancer known as mesothelioma. Preliminary test results suggest that the new mesothelioma treatments may help in extending the lives of patients with the disease, or of stabilizing their condition or shrinking the size of their tumors. Hundreds of British teachers have died from asbestos cancers
A report issued by a British health agency says that hundreds of teachers in the U.K. have died from asbestos-related diseases and that thousands more may be at risk because of the widespread use of asbestos in British schools. The report by the Government’s Health and Safety Executive says that 272 teachers died from asbestos cancers such as mesothelioma between 1980 and 2005. (more…)
Libby officials knew health costs of asbestos contamination
A woman who lived near the site of a former asbestos mine says that its manager knew of health problems among mine workers and citizens of the town while the mine was still in operation. Lerah Parker gave her testimony as part of an ongoing asbestos case brought against the company that owned the mine, W.R. Grace & Co., and five former officials with the company. (more…)
Wisc. court rules insurer must pay full costs of asbestos lawsuits
The Wisconsin Supreme Court has ruled that an insurance company that represents a former manufacturer of asbestos-containing products must cover the cost of injuries related to exposure to those products. The court ruled that Liberty Mutual must cover the cost of injuries related to asbestos exposure involving products manufactured by Plastics Engineering Co. (more…)
Former baseball player Dave Roberts dies of cancer
Dave Roberts, a former major league pitcher and member of the 1979 World Series champion Pittsburg Pirates, died this week of lung cancer caused by asbestos exposure. He was 64 years old. (more…)
Vt. study shows asbestos mines increased local residents’ health risks
A study conducted by the Vermont Department of Health has found that residents living near asbestos mines in the state were at an increased risk of being diagnosed with asbestosis or dying from the disease. Asbestosis is a non-cancerous disease caused by asbestos exposure that can lead to permanent scarring of the lungs. (more…)
Scientists hopeful for mesothelioma cure within five years
Scientists in Australia have discovered a new mesothelioma treatment that may offer the first hope for a cure to patients suffering from the disease. Researchers at the National Centre for Asbestos Related Diseases at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Perth, Australia say that they are hopeful they will be able to start using the new treatment on humans within three to five years. Jury awards $20M verdict to couple in asbestos lawsuit
A jury in San Francisco has awarded a $20 million verdict to a couple who filed a mesothelioma lawsuit against the manufacturers of construction materials containing asbestos. Joan and Daniel Mahoney alleged that she developed mesothelioma after being exposed to asbestos-containing products manufactured by Georgia Pacific Co. and several other companies. (more…)
