Jury awards $13M to woman who contracted mesothelioma from talcum powder

California jury awards $70 million in mesothelioma lawsuit

A California jury has awarded more than $70 million to a husband and wife who filed a mesothelioma lawsuit against a former employer. Robert and Linda Whalen were awarded the sum after finding John Crane Co. negligent in exposing Robert Whalen to the carcinogenic substance asbestos, which ultimately caused Whalen’s mesothelioma cancer.


San Diego woman falsely certified workers for asbestos removal

A San Diego woman has pleaded guilty to falsely certifying workers as trained to remove asbestos. Lachelle Thrower reportedly awarded as many as 150 certificates to workers who did not attend asbestos-removal training or take the necessary exam. Thrower also kept the fees paid by the workers instead of giving the money to the company she worked for.


Insurance companies in U.K. schemed to warp mesothelioma victims’ compensation

A parliamentary inquiry in England has found that insurance companies schemed ways to cheat mesothelioma victims out of their due compensation from asbestos lawsuits. Insurance companies did not pay billions of dollars worth of asbestos claims due to not being able to find the policies of companies that exposed patients to asbestos in the first place. (more…)

Dutch government begins covering costs of asbestosis, mesothelioma

The Dutch government will provide financial compensation to patients who developed mesothelioma cancer or asbestosis as a result of suffering from asbestos exposure in the Netherlands. Patients who were not employed in the Netherlands must prove they lived in the country for at least 10 years during asbestos contamination. (more…)

California jury awards $10.9 M mesothelioma verdict

A California jury has awarded $10.9 million to the family of a deceased plumber in the first ever mesothelioma lawsuit in Fresno County. James Phillips passed away at 59 after contracting mesothelioma while being exposed to asbestos on the job. (more…)

Mesothelioma clinical trials continue despite government shutdown

Patients enrolled in clinical mesothelioma trials at the National Institutes of Health will not have their trial affected by the recent government shutdown. However, an estimated 14,000 employees, or roughly 75% of the staff, have been furloughed due to congress failing to pass a budget. (more…)

Hundreds of buildings in Libby still need asbestos cleanup

Hundreds of buildings in Libby, Montana still need to be cleaned as the government conducts its decontamination of the asbestos-ridden town. Work began in 2009 after the entire town of Libby was declared a public health emergency by the Environmental Protection Agency. (more…)
