The Dutch government will provide financial compensation to patients who developed mesothelioma cancer or asbestosis as a result of suffering from asbestos exposure in the Netherlands. Patients who were not employed in the Netherlands must prove they lived in the country for at least 10 years during asbestos contamination.
In the United States, many patients have filed asbestosis and mesothelioma lawsuits against former employers who are responsible for exposing workers to asbestos. Mesothelioma and asbestosis can take decades to develop and affect more than 4,000 Americans every year.
Many companies have set up mesothelioma trusts to compensate the large number of workers who have suffered from diseases due to asbestos exposure. Workers in construction and industrial companies during the 1940s through 1970s are at a high risk of having been exposed to asbestos, when the carcinogenic material was used prevalently in industry.
